The Gao Region is located in southeastern Azawad, which disputes the claim with Mali. The region's capital city is Gao, which is also the national capital of Azawad as declared by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad. It is internationally recognised as Malian territory due to Azawad's lack of relations with any state. Gao Region is bordered to the south and east by Niger, to the north by Kidal Region, and to the west by Tombouctou Region.
